Claude's Artifacts: A Fairyland For Prototyping

Claude just released a powerful feature - Artifacts. What is it? Where is it? How to use it? Read this post for a dive into the new feature, and gain a firsthand experience!

What is Artifacts

Artifacts is a feature introduced by Anthropic to its AI assistant - Claude. It transforms your conversation with the AI assistant tool into a dynamic visual dashboard in a separate window. Instantly, you can see your ideas come to life!

Where to locate and How to use Artifacts in Claude

The feature was a preview in June and now it's available to all users including those on Free plans. The new feature has been communicated to the users via email only; however, the feature is nowhere to be found on Anthropic's release notes, or in the Claude website interface itself. So, where is it and how to use it?

In the conversation with Claude, simply just prompt the AI assistant to use Artifacts. Here are my prompts to start Artifacts.

Example 1: "How can I use artifacts"

This is the first thing ever you can do as to prompt Claude to generate instruction for you on how to use Artifacts.

Example 2: "Create [a bar chart using the data I gave you] in Artifacts."

This is another way I prompted Claude to use Artifacts. Without specifying the instruction to use Artifacts, Claude gave me answer in its regular conversation window and generated the visualization in the regular response. It kicked off the Artifacts window only when I challenged its result.

Prototype of a Marketing Analytics BI product in Artifacts

Building a prototype in Artifacts can be very effective. I fed AI with mockup Marketing Mix Model results, and asked it to build a dashboard using the mockup data I provided.

Here is my initial prompt:

There are some strategy used in this prompt to get user a better solution.

  • First, give AI tool a persona (e.g. product manager) so the conversation can be more professional and customized.
  • Second, let AI ask clarification questions so it can better understand user's request.

After a few clarifying questions, Claude created below dashboards in Artifacts in a few seconds!

What else can Artifacts do for Analytics professionals

  • Visualize process/concepts in diagrams
The below diagram generated by AI demonstrates the Email marketing funnel.

  • Demonstrate your data visualization imaginations
Below chart generated by prompt AI to generate mockup data and create a visualization for website performance analysis.

What else do you think Artifacts can do for you? What do you concern about? What's your best practice when interacting with Claude using Artifacts? Please feel free to share your thoughts in comments below.
